Plumery is a collection of plumes, or the plural of plume.
And everyone needs more than one plume in their plumage. However, there is more to the name.
Plumes have adorned the headdress of the military for centuries, more famously the Emu Plumes and the Slouch Hat of the ‘Diggers’ of the First World War. In the military, arms (weapons) are stored in the armoury; whereas ‘the plumery’ is where the plumes are stored – ready for special occasions.
Plumery’s name relates to the beauty in adorning oneself in finery – and defining itself as the keeper of many plumes.
